What Is Covered In Our Venepuncture and Cannulation Training

The training provided on the day will cover a comprehensive insight into Venepuncture and Cannulation with both practical and theory sessions included.

The core training on the day includes:

• Define venepuncture and its purpose
• Discuss accountability and the importance of obtaining consent
• Identify roles and responsibilities related to venepuncture in the healthcare setting
• Label the anatomy of veins, and assess and select suitable venepuncture sites while identifying those to avoid
• Describe scenarios where blood should not be taken
• List the necessary equipment for performing venepuncture
• Discuss and ensure accurate labelling of samples
• Explain the correct order of drawing blood and its significance
• Identify relevant policies and procedures for venepuncture in the healthcare environment
• Discuss and practice key skills such as timing, using the non-dominant hand, tourniquet application, and proper needle angles
• Outline basic first aid principles related to phlebotomy
• Reflect on the venepuncture procedure from the patient’s perspective
• Review the full venepuncture procedure step by step
• Practice using a simulation arm to build practical skills

What happens on the day?

Before the training begins, all attendees will sign in and have their ID checked before being offered a range of complimentary refreshments. After this, the training will begin, and all candidates will get hands-on practical training experience and participate in many interactive exercises. All attendees will also have a chance to ask questions and speak to one of our on-site experts, who can help with any queries.
