A Christmas Message to Our Clients

A Christmas Message to Our Clients

This year has been a journey.

Not the glossy, growth-curve sort. More the kind where you keep being told something is being “fixed” while quietly checking that the floor hasn’t fallen away underneath you.

Much of the year was shaped by a very confident idea. That agency staffing was the problem. That it could be reduced through firm language, targets, and the occasional threat of legislation, with savings naturally following. Preferably large ones. Preferably announced early.

To be fair, agency spending did go down in places. It just didn’t disappear. It reappeared via banks and was often more expensive. Usually harder to manage. But under a different label, which is always reassuring. Like moving the same problem into a different spreadsheet and hoping nobody notices it’s wearing the same coat.

What agencies experienced wasn’t falling demand. It was a suppressed demand. Paused roles. Capped rates. Delayed decisions. Shifts that still existed but arrived later, tighter and with less room to manoeuvre. The work didn’t stop. It just became harder to do properly.

Under that pressure, the market responded in different ways.

Many organisations leaned in and did the difficult thing. They invested. They tightened systems. They accepted that proper compliance is rarely convenient and never cheap. Others took a more creative approach. Standards didn’t disappear. That would have been too obvious. Instead, they became flexible. Shorter courses appeared that are anything but compliant. Checks became lighter. Interpretations became more optimistic, such as manual handling via video link. All delivered calmly. All explained confidently, all with the quiet assumption that any consequences would land somewhere else.

Professionals know how that usually ends.

This year, the market was also reminded how unforgiving it has become. A very large, very well-known name quietly vanished. No fanfare. No warning. Just gone. This had a sobering effect. Because when a business of that scale can disappear under sustained pressure, it becomes much harder to believe that everyone else is “thriving” exactly as advertised.

Throughout all of this, agencies continued to face reality. Managing risk. Supporting services. Making careful decisions in environments that rewarded speed over substance. That steadiness mattered.

We’re proud that we didn’t chase shortcuts this year. We didn’t redefine standards to suit the mood. We didn’t borrow credibility or lower the bar when it would have been easier to do so. We kept doing the boring parts properly. Openly. Consistently. With our name on it.

Most importantly, we want to thank you.

The loyalty and trust shown by our clients this year have meant more than we can properly express. It allowed us to hold our nerve, invest where it mattered and keep standards where they belong, even when others were tempted to move faster than was sensible.

As the year draws to a close, we’re proud of what’s been built together and realistic about the road ahead. We don’t take that trust for granted.

We hope the festive period gives you a chance to rest, reset and enjoy a moment of calm before January reminds everyone that they exist.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year
